I had a similar experience that warrants a change. Upon retiring from active duty and having served abroad in Australia on my last assignment I only had in my possession an Australian driver's license (Australian law requires you to obtain a Driver's license if you live/drive in Australia). I too waited for over an hour to be seen the first trip to the Testing Center in Lebanon, TN. When I attempted to obtain a TN Driver's license they required proof I had a valid driver license. I showed them my military ID, DD Form 214 and my Australian Driver's license and explained they stamped a hole in my Mich Driver's license and threw it away since it had a hole in it. The lady at the desk informed me I would have to have the Secretary of State's office in Michigan send a form stating I was licensed to drive in Michigan or I would have to take the entire battery of Driver testing as if I were a brand new driver. I left the facility and contacted the Sec of State's office in my home town and they faxed the required documents to the Lebanon Driver License Testing Center. I was informed I had to return with all of the documents I already presented to the TN Driver's License Testing Center which I did. Round two: I arrived early and received my number and sat down. After an hour plus wait I finally was called and informed I had to take the battery of tests anyway and would have to come back on another day to conduct the driving test... I started to protest and inform the lady the other lady stated I did not have to take the test (the other lady was out conducting the road test with young adults) but bit my lip and took the on-line written test. I completed the on-line test and noticed the lady who stated I did not have to take the tests returned and again patiently waited for her to take over at the counter. Once she assumed her post, at the counter, I discussed with her my dilemma and she in fact talked with the supervisor in the back room and they both came out and apologized about my situation and went ahead and took my picture and processed my TN Driver's license! Unfortunately, this was over two hours later and I was unable to open my small business on time as I needed a Driver License to legally drive my car in the state of tennessee. Whew, if you are still reading "Good on ya". Would like to see veterans serving overseas and having only a foreign country driver's license to have an exemption and have the state of TN accept the foreign driver license with a military active duty or retiree ID card.
Thanks,
LTC (Ret) Kevin J.
